It's been a while since you've written about your CupCake. Are you still playing around with it? Anything new recently?

James, my CupCake is serial number 0006, so it's a MK4. However, I've swapped it with a second generation (very slight changes) MK4 from a later CupCake; and I'm using an incredibly grippy hobbed pulley that a friend made for me. As you'll note above, I have no trouble with grip on the filament -- it's good enough that I previously broke my hot end mounting washer and am now able to stall the motor when the hot end jams.

What style extruder do you have ? Is it an MK4, MK5, MK6, one of the thingiverse variants?

I ask because I had terrible results with the idler on the mk4, I actually managed to crack the acrylic plates from overtightening the idler wheel bolt. There's any number of thingiverse extruder housings / idler designs that would give you a better grip on the filament; assuming you have an mk4.
