Hi, Keith. I've recently started into Arduino and other electronics with my 12-year-old son, and have routed my first board in KiCad... this is timely information, as I'd forgotten about BatchPCB. (So many options.)

Laen's boards are intensely purple. A strong statement. Very good quality and usually ENIG-ed.

Hi Keith, and thanks for an ever interesting blog. I too have picked up electronics as a hobby in recent years, so I'm also getting into PCB design and fabrication.

For PCB prototypes, be sure to checkout http://oshpark.com - the reinvention of Laen's DorkbotPDX pool order. I don't know if the terms have been altered after the recent changes to the site, but you used to get three copies of your board for USD 5 per sq.in. (that's 3 1x1 in boards for USD 5), including shipping within continental US - no hidden extra fees or startup costs. Good quality, lead-free 2-layer boards with solder mask and silkscreening on both sides.

Once you're happy with your boards they also do regular medium-size-runs - or you can take them to another fab house, as you wish. Very flexible - and quite fast too.

I suggest http://www.oshpark.com/ I've been using them for over a year. it's $5 per sq inch for 3 copies (i.e. $1.66 sq/in) including shipping USPS. The boards are made in the US and the turn around time is usually less than 2 weeks.
